Number 4 Martin Place, otherwise known as Challis House, is a landmark building located in the heart of Sydney’s Central Business District. The building is an iconic example of 1930s Art Deco architecture and has played an important role in the history of the city. It was added to the NSW State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.
Today, Challis House is a mixed-use commercial property, home to a range of offices, shops and a hospitality venues.
Premier Waterproofing was engaged by the owners of 4 Martin Place to investigate a series of major water leaks into the top floor tenancies.
The project commenced with a detailed ‘building diagnosis’ involving a thorough examination of the building’s condition, using Premier’s state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. This included an inspection of the internal ceiling void, where widespread water entry was damaging the final finishes.
The location directly above the leakage was a Level 12 external balcony, which was renewed and repaired by the Premier team.
A full inspection of the Level 14 roof membrane was also completed, uncovering areas of damage and age-related deterioration. This had caused water to migrate beneath the roofing membrane. The Premier team rejuvenated and reinforced the existing membrane, while also completing sandstone block work around the building’s façade.
These works were all completed in compliance with the building’s heritage status requirements.
